The Brazilian Film Festival, presented by the Inffinito Festival Circuit—dedicated to presenting the finest new Brazilian films around the world—returns to New York for its twelfth year with a special tribute to Bossa Nova composer Vinicius de Moraes, co-writer of the worldwide hit song “Garota de Ipanema” (The Girl from Ipanema), in honor of the centenary of his birth.
The festival kicks off on June 1 with competitive screenings at Tribeca Cinemas (54 Varick Street) through June 6, and concludes on June 7 with an awards ceremony as part of the City Parks Foundation’s SummerStage in Central Park. The closing event features a free live concert by the internationally renowned Toquinho (Antônio Pecci Filho) a Brazilian singer, guitarist and composer who collaborated with Vinicius for 11 years, producing 120 songs, 25 records and over a thousand shows.
Two films will be screened in honor of Vinicius de Moraes. “Orfeu,” a film based on Vinicius’s re-telling of the Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice, set in Rio during Carnaval, and “Vinicius,” feature film based on his life and work, will be screened as part of the Tribute Screenings at Tribeca Cinemas.
