Summer Cinema Series Goes Out with a Bang!

Clueless-Cast-90s-Movies-Cast-of-Clueless

In conclusion to our Summer Cinema Series, Tribeca Cinemas went out with a bang with a killer screening of CLUELESS on Thursday 8/14. While our two previous editions (Dazed and Confused and Lost Boys) were great successes, we never could have imagined the stellar turn out and all around great vibes that our Clueless event produced.

Walking into The Varick Room last Thursday, guests were immediately transported back to the 90s with hits from Now That’s What I Call Music Vol. 1 blaring over the speakers, and girls in knee-high socks and plaid tops wherever you looked (we want to throw out a special thanks to those who dressed up – you truly embodied the Clueless aesthetic and made the place look great)! Everyone seemed in high spirits while enjoying the one hour open vodka bar before the film, courtesy of the very generous SOBIESKI VODKA.

Our highlight of the evening was a special surprise appearance by Amy Heckerling – director of the film (and many other esteemed films including Fast Times at Ridgemont High, and Look Who’s Talking). Heckerling presented an endearing introduction to the film, stating that she was feeling depressed that morning, opened up the Village Voice, and upon seeing an ad for our event decided “What the Hell?” she’d come to join us.

The film proceeded with great enthusiasm. While our theaters were packed, guests were able to pop back out into The Varick Room, grab another “Valley Girl Punch,” and never miss a beat of the film while it played on our large projector and screens in the lounge.

Clueless 2

Post-screening, Amy Heckerling graciously joined us again for a Q & A. Questions ranged from how she made her casting decisions (she saw Alicia Silverstone in a trilogy of Aerosmith music videos and was convinced she was the perfect Cher), to how she came up with the story (she wanted to write a character that wasn’t necessarily the smartest, but saw the good in everyone – and then added “wouldn’t that be crazy?”), to what it’s like to be a woman filmmaker in a male-dominated industry (extremely tough). And make sure to keep an eye out for her next project…. She’s currently working on CLULESS: THE MUSICAL! Like totally awesome.

All in all it was a FABULOUS evening full of laughing, dancing, and celebrating a classic high school film. It is certainly worth noting that almost 20 years since Clueless’ debut, it can still sell out a couple of NYC theaters – way to go, Amy Heckerling!

Please join us for our next TC Presents event in September with the usual one hour open Sobieski Vodka bar preceding the film. Be on the lookout - we’ll be announcing the date and film title soon!

Thanks again to our loyal vodka sponsors Sobieski Vodka, and everyone who came out for Clueless and made it a very special evening!
