Program Notes
Gunther Strobbe is the youngest generation of a line of proud (and often drunk) Strobbe men. Recalled from Gunther's life as an unsuccessful writer in his early thirties, this Flemish seriocomedy ruminates over Gunther's ribald, troubled adolescence amongst three bawdy uncles, an ever-boozing dad, one put-upon grandmother, and more dysfunction than you can shake a keg at. Adapted from an acclaimed novel by Dimitri Verhulst and directed with deftness and verve by Felix Van Groeningen, THE MISFORTUNATES is that rare, great film that can pack equal amounts of heart, soul and pathos into a goodnight kiss and a drinking contest.
Expected to be in attendance: Director Felix van Groeningen
