Program Notes

THE MESSENGER's superbly crafted story and powerful lead performances are certain to pass the test of time, as this breathtaking film by first time director Oren Moverman already has the feel of an instant classic. Ben Foster (3:10 TO YUMA, X-MEN: THE LAST STAND) is in the role of a lifetime as Will, an injured soldier who returns from Iraq to serve his last few months in active duty notifying families of the deaths of loved ones lost in combat. With fellow soldier and incorrigible wit Tony (Woody Harrelson) as his unlikely sidekick, Will reluctantly faces one of his most burdensome missions – and most difficult ethical dilemmas – while struggling to readjust to civilian life.

About the Director

Born in Israel, Oren Moverman moved to New York in 1988 after completing four years of military service as an infantry soldier. He co-wrote Todd Haynes's Bob Dylan biopic I'M NOT THERE and was also a screenwriter and associate producer of JESUS' SON. THE MESSENGER is his first film as a director.
