Program Notes

Doctor Parnassus is the proprietor of a traveling "Imaginarium"ù in which paying customers are invited to cross into a hallucinatory otherworld to uncover their true selves. Long ago, as an impetuous youth, Parnassus made a deal with the devil, Mr. Nick, for eternal life. Mr. Nick has now come to collect his due: the soul of Parnassus's blushing daughter, Valentina. Parnassus and his ragtag band must race against time in an all-out battle against Mr. Nick within the Imaginarium's surreal fantasy world. The first to claim five souls will win Valentina, and whichever of her suitors (Andrew Garfield and Heath Ledger) can outsmart Mr. Nick will also earn her hand in marriage.  Terry Gilliam gives free rein to his signature whimsicality in the Imaginarium's rich, cartoonish, constantly shifting landscape, and the adventurous film brims with affectionate nods to its late star, Heath Ledger, whose role was assumed by Johnny Depp, Jude Law, and Colin Farrell.

Expected to be in attendance:  Producer Amy Gilliam
