Program Notes

Produced by HBO Films, SCHMATTA: RAGS TO RICHES TO RAGS chronicles the century-long story of the American garment industry, from its Lower East Side sweatshop beginnings to its booming post-WWII rise as an emblematic American/New York City institution and its devastating fall at the hands of a post-Reagan global economy. Filmmaker Mark Levin has crafted a rich work packed with alarming statistics and parallels that celebrates an industry's thoroughly American ingenuity and craftsmanship while also offering a piercing critique of our bottom-line, corporate-capitalist culture. Suffused with relevancy, SCHMATTA is never less than engrossing.

Expected to be in attendance:  Director Marc Levin
