Program Notes
John Rabe (Ulrich Tukur) is an unlikely hero. He’s spent years in Nanking building a career, remaining steadfastly loyal to his wife, his company, his country and the National Socialist party. When Japanese forces begin their brutal occupation of the city in late 1937, Rabe’s comfortable life comes to an end and he reluctantly joins with a cynical American doctor (Steve Buscemi) and a motley group of expatriates to save the citizens of Nanking. Daniel Bruhl also stars in this epic production that depicts the true story of a man’s epiphany of conscience when faced with the horror of war.
