Program Notes

"We were asked to believe that the war was over. We laughed - for we were the war." So begins Michael Tucker and Petra Epperlein's (GUNNER PALACE) haunting tapestry of young Iraq veterans coming home. Throughout the election year of 2008, these men struggle to integrate war experiences into post-war lives: one earnestly launches a congressional campaign, another tends to his ailing mother, and a third lives an endlessly repeating memorial to fallen comrades as part of a touring cage-fighting career. When the American flag is folded at a memorial service, each fold is sent to represent a virtue. Tucker and Epperlein unpack this symbolism as they, along with the soldiers, reconcile the idealized and abstract discourse of war with its heartbreaking reality.
