Program Notes

Gregory Corso, the youngest of the influential Beat Poet movement, is given his own spotlight in Gustave Reinenger's affectionate documentary. A New York native, Corso survived an abusive childhood, adolescence in prison (first for stealing a toaster, later a suit) and a lifelong drug addiction to author such seminal works of Beat poetry as "Bomb" and "Marriage." Reinenger's long friendship with Corso late in his life affords him an intimacy with his iconic subject and Corso's larger-than-life character is captured like lightning in a bottle. Sensitive narration by Ethan Hawke fills in the rest. It is easy to see why Allen Ginsberg dubbed Corso "a poet's poet."

Expected to be in attendance:  Director Gustave Reinenger
